About this activity

After breakfast, the Ethiopian tour guide will pick you up at your hotel and then walk to the harbor.

Take a boat that will take you to the outlet of the Blue Nile, Lake Tana, for watching hippos and birds. Before or after you see fishermen with tankwa (a vessel boat that made out of Cyprus papyrus plant) and then ahead to Mehal Zeghe Giorgis monastery, the place where the boat will drop you and start your trekking on the peninsula.

From Mehal Zeghe Giorgis, walk (1-1:30 hours) up to the hill called Ararat through evergreen forest and coffee plantation. While you walk through this route, you will have a chance to watch yellow fronted parrots, butterflies, monkeys, various forest birds and indigenous trees.

Along the way, you will have lunch with coffee under a tree.

Ararat Hill will be your final destination and after you reached the hilltop, trek downwards to Ura Kidane Mihiret Monastery.

Later, walk down to the harbor and taste Arebica, the famous coffee on earth.

Head back to Bahir Dar.

  • Ura Kidane Mihrett ranks not only as the most impressive of the southern monasteries, but also possibly the most beautiful church anywhere in Tana region. This monastery was founded in the 14th century by a saint called Aba Yohannes and the present church was built in the 16th century. In the peninsula, there are other monasteries such as Azwa Maryam, Mahilzegie Giorgis, Betre Maryam, Silasie, Furie Mariam and Yiganda Tekele Haymanot.
  • In the Middle Ages, churches sought refuge on the islands of Lake Tana and due in part to the difficult access are to this day rich in Ethiopian illuminated manuscripts, religious paintings and other treasures. Lake Tana is the outlet the Blue Nile and from where the famed Blue Nile starts its long journey to Khartoum and then feeds into the Mediterranean Sea. The 37 islands that are scattered about the surface of the lake shelter the fascinating churches and monasteries. Some of which have histories dating back to the 13th-17th century.
