Day 2: Adelaide International Bird Sanctuary

Stop At: Adelaide International Bird Sanctuary, Whiting rd, St Kilda, Salisbury, South Australia Australia
The early bird gets the worm! Awaken to the lapping sounds of the coast and fuel up with a cooked breakfast before we head to the shoreline for some bird watching. Using binoculars and a specialist birding scope scan for the rare and migratory birds that frequent this core conservation area. This sanctuary encompasses over 60km of coastline and some of the birds fly from as far as Siberia and Alaska through the East Asian-Australasian Flyway. Flying through as many as 22 countries to feed and roost here each summer. Over 27,000 individuals and 50 species of migratory birds have been recorded. Some of the rare and threatened species seen include the Curlew sandpiper, Ruddy turnstone, Red knot and Eastern Curlew. How many can you spot?

After our morning birdwatching head off for a leisurely bushwalk with your guide and soak up the terrestrial environment that this National Park offers. Maybe spot a sleepy lizard basking in the sun or just enjoy the sounds of the native bush birds as you stroll along the trails.

Now it’s time to discover the local secrets of catching a blue swimmer crab. The infamous “crab raking” technique involves using a specialised rake to encourage the crab out of the sand and latch on to the end. There’s sure to be plenty of laughs with this one. After this eventful activity dry off in the sun while the camp manager cooks your seafood lunch. Yum! Soak up the final moments in the Bird Sanctuary before a restful drive back to the city centre and say your farewells as the tour comes to an end.
