This is the tour for the how-it-was made buffs. It is a narration of what all it took to achieve the grand design that Shah Jehan chose for the Taj Mahal. It explains the various engineering marvels that had to be executed to make this marvel a reality. How the architect Isa Mian actually imagined the conception of paradise on earth, with gardens and a stream to gild the eternal resting places of the King & Queen. How craftsmen from all across the globe were brought in to create the jeweled look of the Taj Mahal. It ends with a visit to the museum that houses rare documents belonging to that era.

The over 450-year-old Agra Fort, was in fact the very place from which India was ruled for over 100 years. This UNESCO World Heritage Site was a witness to the victorious entry of Babur after the epoch changing first Battle of Panipat. It tells the story of the rise of the boy king Akbar to Akbar the Great. Within its walls echoes the tragic story of Aurangzeb’s bloody coup against the reigning emperor and his own father Shah Jehan.

It is often said that when the Mughals started building in India they started out like Titans making formidable forts and sprawling cities but ended up like jewellers creating finely intricate architectural wonders such as Baby Taj. This monument was built by the famous queen Nur Jehan for her father Mirza Ghiyas Beg. Called baby Taj owing to its similarity to the Taj Mahal, it a quiet place alongside the river Yamuna with leafy green trees and a delightful sight at sunset.

Visit: Tomb of Akbar the Great, 282007 India

The Mausoleum of Akbar the Great at Sikandra reflects a big irony of history. The greatest Mughal emperor chose a very humble design for his own resting place. The site was chosen in Akbar’s own life time but it was finally finished by his son Jehangir. The building is a four-tiered pyramid, surmounted by a marble pavilion containing the false tomb. The painted ceiling of the cenotaph is breath taking. It was restored in the early 20th century. Visitors are often surprised by the large herd of blackbucks that graze here.

Visit: Fatehpur Sikri India

The UNESCO World Heritage Site of Fatehpur Sikri is Akbar’s great imperial dream in red sandstone. It was amongst the biggest cities of the medieval world. Father Monserrate, a Portuguese visiting Akbar’s court was amazed by its sheer size. This walk follows a circuit that takes you through magnificent palaces and structures such as the as Diwan-e-Aam, Diwan-e-Khas, Panch Mahal, Khwaabgah, Daftarkhana and Anup Talao. It ends at the world famous Sufi shrine of Salim Chishti, where according to belief you can tie thread to make your wish come true.
