Day trip to Gwalior from Agra

The glory of Madhya Pradesh, the city of Gwalior is home to structures of architectural genius that must be seen to be believed. After we pick you up from your hotel lobby, your chauffeur will drive you to this glorious city. Head straight to the invincible Gwalior Fort, built in the 8th century, by the King of Gwalior, Raja Man Singh Tomar. The Raja was suffering from leprosy, a disease with no cure in that era. The king was cured after sage Gwalipa offered him water from a holy pond. After consuming the pond water, the cured king built this gigantic structure with 35-feet-high walls out of reverence to the sage and named the city after him. Several palaces, intricately carved structures, magnificent temples, beautiful paintings and a water tank also occupy the fort premises. Iconic structures like Man Mandir, also known as Chit Mandir or Painted Palace, and Gurjari Mahal, add to the beauty of Gwalior. While the former is replete with historical tales, the latter was built by the Raja for his favourite wife. Music lovers will love the Sarod Ghar, a museum where you can see instruments and photographs of the ancient musical eras and understand how music evolved. Gwalior Fort is also home to the 8th century Teli Ka Mandir, dedicated to Vishnu, Shiva and Matrikas and the 11th century twin temple, the Sasbahu temple. See the Ghaus Mohammend Tomb, a brilliant example of early Mughal architecture and end your Gwalior escapade with a visit to the remarkable Jai Vilas Palace Museum (closed on Wednesdays), the royal residence of the famous Scindia Dynasty.
