About this activity
We invite you to visit the land of intriguing tales, Fatehpur Sikri! Your private guide will pick you up from your hotel lobby and drive you to this ‘ghost-town’, replete with interesting legends and tales. A testimony of an emperor’s gratitude, Fatehpur Sikri was built by Emperor Akbar. The emperor, who had lost his twin sons pined for an heir to his throne and traversed to Sikri where he met the Sufi Saint Sheik Salim Chisti. The saint foretold that Akbar would soon be blessed with an heir. In gratitude to the saint, the Mughal Emperor built the iconic Jama Masjid and named his son after him; Prince Salim, who grew up to be Emperor Jahangir! When the prince was just 2 years old, Akbar decided to build an entire city in reverence to the Sufi saint. Thus was born Fatehpur Sikri, meaning ‘victory city’. Akbar continued to build mosques, palaces and grand courts in the city, later renamed Fatehpur Sikri as he emerged victorious in his conquests. The 176 feet high Buland Darwaza or ‘Gateway of magnificence’ –with its intricate carving of verses from the Holy Quran was built to mark the Mughal acquisition of Gujarat. Akbar also built the Sheikh Salim Chishti Dargah in pure white marble, in tribute to the Sufi saint. Minor monuments like the Rang Mahal, Kabutar Khana, Hathi Pole, Sangin Burj, Hiran Minar and the Karawan Sarai come together to lend this now abandoned city, its old-world charm. Despite the passage of hundreds of years, since the city was built, its royal charm continues to enamour tourists from across the world. After four enriching hours with us, we drop you back to your hotel where your tour concludes.
