About this activity
Lake Mývatn tour description
Tour starts with a departure from Akureyri Port were we drive towards the magnificent Lake Mývatn area. Our first stop is by Goðafoss Waterfall. Goðafoss plays an important role in the Icelandic history, particularly in connection with the introduction of Christianity. Our first stop at the Lake Mývatn area are the picturesque Skútustaðagígar Psuedo Craters, formed from explosions when the flowing hot lava met with the ice cold water from the lake. We continue to Dimmuborgir Lava Fields, full of lava-pillars and formations that are rich of mythical sagas and ghoulish trails. We come to the warm underground river in Grjótagjá Rift, where you will stand on the continental rift between Europe and America. The final stop by Lake Mývatn is the geothermal area of Hverir, with boiling mud pools, steaming fumaroles and sulphur pits. Various photo stops are added to the tour depending on the weather. The tour ends with a return back to port in Akureyri, in time for your ship’s departure.

This was a fantastic tour and we did even more than was on the itinerary. We saw Goðafoss Waterfall, Skútustaðagígar Pseudo Craters, Dimmuborgir Lava Formations, The Rift Between the Eurasian and American Continents, Mt. Námafjall, Hverir and one of my personal favorites that was not listed: Grjótagjá Cave - the famous scene from Game of Thrones where Jon Snow sealed the deal with Ygritte. Our tour guide was excellent and not only was he very informative but went out of his way take us to a few extra stops that were very cool such as Grjótagjá Cave. You pretty much can't go wrong visiting anywhere in Iceland but make sure you take the time to see the northern part as well because the scenery up there was just spectacular as you can see in the photos!
