About this activity
Tour starts with a departure from Akureyri Port were we drive towards the magnificent Lake Mývatn area. Our first stop is by Goðafoss Waterfall. Goðafoss plays an important role in the Icelandic history, particularly in connection with the introduction of Christianity. Our first stop at the Lake Mývatn area are the picturesque Skútustaðagígar Psuedo Craters, formed from explosions when the flowing hot lava met with the ice cold water from the lake. We continue to Dimmuborgir Lava Fields, full of lava-pillars and formations that are rich of mythical sagas and ghoulish trails. We come to the warm underground river in Grjótagjá Rift, where you will stand on the continental rift between Europe and America. The final stop by Lake Mývatn is the geothermal area of Hverir, with boiling mud pools, steaming fumaroles and sulphur pits. Various photo stops are added to the tour depending on the weather. Easily found guide at cruise port. Took small van to see many varied sights. Waterfalls and lava fields and boiling mud pots. Made several other photo stops.

Given our short time in Akureyri (around eight hours) on a cruise ship, this tour was perfect for the time we had and for our budget (ship based similar shore excursions were almost double the cost). The sights were all incredible and all 'must-see'. The driver/guide was also excellent and made sure that everyone got the most out of their day... I will also say that the mini-bus was excellent and had incredible wifi access.

We had a great guide with Dori - knowledgeable, interesting, and personable! He knew what he was doing and helped us learn and see so much! I'd choose him again anytime. We loved Akureyri every bit as much as Reykjavik, which I didn't expect. There's no way we could have done 1/2 of this on our own, and it was MUCH better than what the ship had to offer.

Our guide was excellent and the variety on the trip was also wonderful. This was one of our highlights of our 5 days in Iceland. The scenery was awesome and the pace of the trip was also good.

Thora was a lovely tour guide! Besides seeing some amazing and lovely sights, Thora perfectly accompanied the tour with lots of added knowledge that enriched our time. Wish we had more time.
