About this activity
The charming town of Alkmaar is compact, walkable and historically rich, with a beautiful medieval centre. In this small group tour, enjoy walking through the cobbled streets and along picturesque canals as your guide tells you all about the town's history. You will also get an insight into Dutch culture and way of life from a foreigner's perspective. You will not only see some of Alkmaar's most iconic monuments, but you will also wander off the beaten path and see the 'real' Alkmaar. All tours will be given in English by a native English speaker (Canadian).
Meeting Point: The tour will depart from near the entrance to the Grote Sint Laurenskerk in Alkmaar's city centre.
What to Expect on a Tour:

Walk 3-4km through the medieval centre, along picturesque streets and canals
•
See some of Alkmaar's most important and historic monuments such as the Grote Sint Laurenskerk (the Great St. Lawrence Church), the Stadhuis (City Hall) and the Waag (Weigh House).

Learn all about the history of Alkmaar and how the strength and the determination of the townspeople managed to defeat the Spanish forces in 1573 and why 'Victory Begins at Alkmaar'.

Get an insight into Dutch culture and way of life from a foreigner's perspective

Walk along the old city walls and experience the greener side of Alkmaar

Stop at the Molen van Piet (Piet's Windmill) for the perfect Dutch photo opportunity!

What to Bring: You will need comfortable walking shoes and rain gear (as required). Don't forget your camera!
How to Get to Alkmaar: Alkmaar has direct train connections from many large cities including Amsterdam (35mins) and Haarlem (40mins) and the Alkmaar Train Station is only a 10min walk from the city centre. There are also several parking garages located just outside the city centre.
