Herculaneum Walking Tour

The site where everything is history. Herculaneum was a holiday destination for the Roman aristocracy, a small chest full of miracles. In its private residences and public buildings were found marble decorations, wall paintings, mosaic floors as well as objects implemented in the everyday life. The city was destroyed in just a few minutes during the Mt. Vesuvius eruption in 79 A.D. Pompeii, Oplontis and Stabiae were destroyed either. A lush city was instantly buried by a pyroclastic avalanche and a thick blanket of mud had rested over it for the centuries to come. The discovery of this site was an accident during the construction of a well in 1709. Since then not more than 1/3 of the city has been uncovered. Walking down the streets of this city is like returning to the glorious past of Roman Empire. Unlike in Pompeii, the ruins of Herculaneum contain organic artifacts such as wooden furniture pieces, clothes, and even vegetables. Only in Herculaneum we were able to find two-story buildings with wooden beams preserved by the scorching heat of the fire and turned into carbon. Thus we are able to imagine the way a Roman town must have looked like. Herculaneum is one of the most important touristic attraction in Italy. Every day it is visited by thousands of tourists coming from all over the world.
