Pompeii had gained their wealth by hosting gladiatorial games in a big amphitheater and by trading goods as well as producing some of the valuable goods themselves, like the famous garum fish sauce. According to a fascinating account of Plinius the Elder, who died himself during the second day of the eruption, the towns of Pompeii and Herculaneum were devastated by a huge volcanic eruption in 79 AD. The whole coastline was completely buried under a thick layer of ash and lapilli (burning pieces of pumice stone).
