About this activity
A chance to see great Pompeii in comfort and tranquility. Pompeii is a place which one must simply visit because it can’t be described with words or pictures. But there’s one problem – everyone wants to see Pompeii, so it is visited by huge crowds of people. We have a great solution to you if you want to stay away from queues and countless groups of tourists. Before visiting Pompeii, we’ll get a chance of seeing the ruins from a high bell tower in the modern city of Pompei. 82 meters of altitude will allow us to gaze as far as the Gulf of Naples. The tour we offer will take you for a walk to explore Pompeii in a nice and quiet environment. Along our way, we’ll see many of the unknown magic corners of the site. We’ll see the Amphitheater, Orto dei Fuggiaschi, Necropolis of Nocera Gate, the main street of the city called “Via dell’Abbondanza” with its several shops and houses, via Stabiana, House of Golden Cupids, Vesuvio Gate, Villa of the Mysteries. The town of Pompeii is located on a volcanic terrace to the South from the majestic Mount Vesuvius. Pompeii was founded long before Romans came here, but it’s fame really started off with the Roman expansion in the second century BC. After Sulla took Pompeii during the Social War, this city became the main Roman port for the inland cities of Campania such as Nocera, Acerra, and Nola. Pompeii had gained their wealth by hosting gladiatorial games in a big amphitheater and by trading goods as well as producing some of the valuable goods themselves, like the famous garum fish sauce. According to a fascinating account of Plinius the Elder, who died himself during the second day of the eruption, the towns of Pompeii and Herculaneum were devastated by a huge volcanic eruption in 79 AD. The whole coastline was completely buried under a thick layer of ash and lapilli (burning pieces of pumice stone).
