About this activity
Full day Shore excursion with private transportation. Salerno is situated in a natural bay overlooked by the Castel Arechi, a bright example of medieval architecture. The historical center branches out in many typically medieval alleys; here it is possible to enjoy the ancient story of the city and the old expertise of artisan shops. Walking down the alleys the tourists can discover the St. Matthew Church, the main attraction of the city. With its atrium surrounded on four sides by a portico, the Romanesque entrance “ Porta dei Leoni” and the opulent decorations that adorn the walls of the sacred site, it’s one of the most beautiful churches in this area. St. Matthew’s Church speaks volumes about the splendor of the medieval Salerno. During the Norman period, Salerno was in its zenith, culture, and economics proliferated. It became a breeding ground for the Schola Medica Salernitana, the first medical school in the world. The beautiful seafront deserves a particular mentioning, in fact, it is considered one of the charmest seafronts of Italy. It offers a magnificent view over the gulf. The second part of the tour is the visit of the archaeological site of Paestum. With its three Greek temples, Paestum is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. In the past Paestum was called the town of Poseidonia and it developed as a maritime economical center. Visiting the site is like walking into a time warp. These monuments are best preserved among the “Magna Grecia” monuments. As already mentioned, Paestum had three temples, all close to each other, which is a very impressive sight for the tourists. The biggest one is Poseidon’s temple built on a solid triangular pediment and impressive Doric columns. The so-called Basilica has got 50 intact Doric columns. The last one is called Ceres' temple, but it was actually dedicated to Athena. Visitors will have the possibility to visit the National Archaeological Museum where treasures are kept, such as sculptures, bas-reliefs and the famous Greek tomb of the Diver “Del Tuffatore”.
