About this activity
You will leave the hotel early in the morning to drive south to the Nabatean Red Rose City of Petra, one of the Seven Wonders of the World, for a classic visit. As you travel, gaze at the green landscapes and hear tales of Jordan’s history. Hewn into a sandstone valley carved by the Nabatean people some 2,000 years ago, this ancient rose-red rock city located 245 kilometers from Amman at the crossroads of age-old trading routes, to dominate ancient Arabia. Pass by Little Petra, a small rocky valley with carvings, that archaeologists believe acted as the Nabatean’s caravan before heading to the main city and as an accommodation stop for the traders who traveled through the city. Continue to Petra main site to learn more about its magnificent history. On arrival, leave your vehicle, and enjoy a 2-hour tour of this UNESCO Heritage listed wonder with a local guide. First, walk or ride a horse through the famous “siq”, a narrow path of 1.2 kilometers; rock fissure that was once the main entrance to the city, and marvel at your first glimpse of the hauntingly beautiful Treasury “El Khazneh” as the canyon suddenly opens up. Admire this rose-pink masterpiece, originally built to house priceless treasures and capture it on camera. Then, walk through the widening canyon to witness other buildings such as the 3,000-seater Theater, Royal Tombs, and the High Place of Sacrifice: a clifftop altar that was once used for animal sacrifices and other ceremonies. As you explore, listen as your guide describes how the Nabateans sculpted the buildings, and learn how they mastered the harsh desert conditions to make their lives here.

After this long walk, return to the capital of Amman, for a panoramic tour of the city’s highlights. Drive around the downtown area past animated markets, churches, and mosques like King Abdullah’s mosque. Pass King Hussein’s Palace, where the late, revered king is laid to rest. Discover the Roman, Byzantine, and Islamic-era ruins of Amman Citadel for a view point. Gaze in awe at the Roman Amphitheater, carved into a hillside in the 2nd century B.C. and the most important remnant of Amman’s predecessor, the Roman white city of Philadelphia. Free time at leisure in Amman downtown area for souvenir shopping in the local gold and spice markets. Your tour then concludes by strolling along Jabal Al Webdeih and Jabal Amman Quarters, the Rainbow Street, Amman’s colorful arts and shopping hot spot. Delve into the upscale neighborhoods of “Abdoun” and “Swefieh”, where luxury shopping malls and swanky private villas line the streets. After passing thru the modern Amman drive back to your hotel.

The trip was very well organized. I had an excellent driver who makes passengers comfortable and safety first. The guide at Petra too was knowledgeable. However what I have realized is that the Petra day Trip included Amman sightseeing. I am sorry to say that I really do not think the Amman sightseeing part of the deal was covered.
