Zuiderzeemuseum Enkhuizen by Train combined with Canal Cruise in Amsterdam
1 day
By train
About this activity
Start your day in Amsterdam by picking up your traintickets at the canal cruise company in Amsterdam. Absorb the canal-front sights of Amsterdam on a leisurely 75-minute sightseeing cruise. Take a seat in a comfortable, glass-topped boat, and enjoy the views as you glide along the city’s UNESCO World Heritage-listed canals and listen to the informative audio commentary. Drift by top Amsterdam attractions such as the Anne Frank House and City Hall, and drink in the gabled townhouses, bridges and leafy canalsides from the peaceful vantage point of the water. A relaxing way to get to know the pretty Dutch capital for first-time visitors.
Then, either the same or the next day, make your way to Amsterdam Central station and catch the train to Enkhuizen. Sit back and relax whilst beautiful, typical dutch polder landscapes will be your scenery for one hour. After arrival in Enkhuizen a boat will be waiting to take you to the museum.
Outdoor Museum
The Museum ferry carries you across the IJsselmeer to the Outdoor Museum where you can take a walk through history. The open-air section covers 15 acres and accommodates authentic buildings from the former Zuiderzee region, such as a church, a fish-curing shed, a mill, a cheese warehouse, shops and dwelling houses from the surrounding fishing villages. You can help craftspeople in the Marker harbour making nets or produce a rope at the rope-maker’s workplace,
Indoor Museum
The Indoor Museum is the treasure chamber of the Zuiderzee. Temporary exhibitions display the rich collection of the Museum. For example the exhibition Journey around the Zuiderzee presents highlights of the collection and personal stories of life in villages around the former Zuiderzee. Join the Journey round the Zuiderzee and find out what life by this former inland sea was like. With history, photography, traditional costume, design and an attractive and educational family exhibition, the Indoor Museum offers something for everyone.
Theme 2018; A Taste of history.
This year, the main theme is entitled A Taste of History: what was on the menu about a hundred years ago? Where did the ingredients come from? And, equally important in times before the household refrigerator was introduced: how did people make their food last as long as possible?
Food and drinks
When on a visit to our Outdoor Museum, do not forget to visit one of our restaurants, varying from a snug pub to a self-service restaurant.
After having spent a few to maximum 7 hours in the museum, you catch the train back to the city of Amsterdam or if you wish, spend the remainder of the day in the historic village of Enkhuizen. Your ticket for you return journey is valid until midnight.
