About this activity
Join your knowledgeable ‘Hoperator' for a fun filled round-trip tour from Anchorage as you taste your way through the Alaska craft beverage industry. Your day begins as you board the Alaska Railroad bound for beautiful Girdwood, Alaska. Take in the mountain vistas, scenic coastline, and grandeur that is ALASKA on the 1 hour ride to our first stop, Alyeska Resort. Keep your eyes peeled for wildlife like bear, moose, eagles, Dall sheep, and Beluga whales. Included in the tour is one-way rail travel to Girdwood, a tram ride and lunch atop Mt. Alyeska, and private tours and tastings at Girdwood Brewing Co., Anchorage Distillery, and Double Shovel Cider Co. Let us show you a one-of-a-kind off the beaten path tour experience!

We will board the Alyeska Aerial Tram for a birds-eye view of the Girdwood Valley and surrounding Chugach Mountains before topping out at our lunch perch atop Mt. Alyeska. From 2,300ft. above the valley floor we will enjoy lunch at the Bore Tide Bar and Deli while soaking in the breath-taking panoramic views.

Once fueled up on our lunches, we will make our way to Girdwood Brewing Company. Founded in 2017, we will cozy up in this beautiful brewery while we taste the hand crafted beers and receive a behind the scenes tour the brewery.

Continuing the adventure back to Anchorage, we will parallel the Turnagain Arm on the most scenic 40 mile drive in Alaska. We will visit the largest distillery in Alaska. Utilizing Alaska grown barley and wheat, fresh Alaskan berries, and pristine glacier water, Anchorage Distillery is crafting some of the state’s smoothest gins, vodkas, and whiskeys. We will sample these spirits straight or in a handmade craft cocktail and go behind the scenes to take a closer look at the production process.

Rounding out our Alaska Crafted Tour will find us at one of the most popular tasting rooms in the state, Double Shovel Cider Company. Named for a caribou antler formation prized by hunters, Double Shovel opened in 2016 as the first microcidery in Alaska. Sourcing as many local Alaskan apples as possible and utilizing a proprietary juice blend from the Pacific Northwest, see and sample these gluten free cider blends at the source.

Your Alaska Crafted tour will finish with a airport or hotel drop-off within the Anchorage bowl.

From the Alaska shoreline to the the big city, you will experience the Alaska craft beverage scene in style on this off-the-beaten path tour. With a maximum group size of 14, this small group tour ensures a personalized experience full of stories and surprises you’ll be sure to recount to your friends back home.

Big Swigs rail and crafted tour was perfect for us. Bryan picked us up at our hotel and took us to the train station. He walked us into the station and waited until we had our boarding passes. We rode the train along Turnagain Arm for about an hour to Girdwood, where he was waiting with his van. From there we went up to the Aleyska ski resort and took the tram to the top. We had over an hour at the top where there is a cafeteria, gift shop, viewpoints and a cozy bar and grill. We used our voucher for lunch. Then we headed back to the Girdwood Brewery. I was glad I had a substantial lunch because the pours are generous! After touring the brewery we returned by van to Anchorage for a distillery tour and finally a cidery. Bryan took us back to our hotel, pointing out restaurants as we went. The tour is a great way to ride the train, take in the views and meet the locals- a full day.
