About this activity
We offer you exclusive year-round access to the Alaska Native Heritage Center while it is closed to the public during the fall, winter, and spring months! Inside the facility we will explore the Hall of Cultures which provides exhibits to learn about each of the five major culture groups in Alaska before we head outside for a guided walk around Lake Tiulana. Stroll through six authentic life-sized Native dwellings to learn about the traditional ways of the Athabascan, Inupiaq/St. Lawrence Island Yupik, Yup’ik/Cup’ik, Aleut, Alutiiq, and the Eyak, Tlingit, Haida and Tsimshian peoples. This is the only center that fully celebrates these five major culture groups under one roof! Depending on conditions, snowshoes are used for ease of walking during the village site visits. Please be prepared to be outdoors for 1.5 - 2 hours; dress in layers and don’t forget your winter boots, hat and gloves! We will take photos and learn hands on about the different artifacts placed at the village sites, from a story-filled totem to a whale bone arch. We will finish our tour with a film presentation and traditional tea in the theater room. There will be a stop at Heritage Gifts prior to your hotel return. NOTE: This tour is only available Monday - Friday, as the Elders meet within the Center during the weekend.
