About this activity
Elevation: 13,044ft / 3,976m

Last major eruption: 1972

Status: Dormant

Duration: Two days, one night

Challenge = DIFFICULT:

As the title suggest, this is a challenging tour for any client of average fitness level. Expect one to two days of 8 to 10 hours of hiking with a full backpack over technical trail aspects such as rock scrambling, slippery and steep terrain.

Excursion Highlight: Toasting a glass of wine on the peak while the sun sinks below the clouds, watching the sunset over all of Guatemala from 13,044ft / 3976m

Includes: Lunch, dinner and breakfast, warm clothing, tents, sleeping pad, transportation, guide, and good time. Bring a backpack (55 liters or bigger!) and sleeping bag or borrow or rent one of ours.

Trip Description: This excursion is the one that started it all! O.X. spends more time on this mountain than all other companies combined. Volcan Acatenango, the sleeping giant that looms over the Antiguan valley is, in the opinion of O.X., the most beautiful and diverse volcano in all of Guatemala.

Acatenango is the third highest volcano in all of Central America and it guarantees a challenge and adventure. Sleeping overnight gives you the amazing opportunity to experience a sunset and sunrise from almost 4,000 meters (13,000 ft!). The air is crisp and cool and the beauty mesmerizing.

From this vantage point, you hang out above the clouds, on top of the world, and looking out onto neighboring volcanoes, Volcan Agua gentle and serene and Volcan Fuego the ever angry, lava spilling mountain which seems so close you can touch it. We do not know exactly what is going to happen up there, but we guarantee the beauty will move you.
