Itinerary

Day 1: Negombo - Minneriya National Park

Stop At: Minneriya National Park, Maradankadawala-Habarana-Thirukkondaiadimadu Highway, Habarana 50150 Sri Lanka
The National Park lies within a complex of protected areas that includes Minneriya- Giritale Nature Reserve and Sigiriya Sanctuary, all of which were established with different but complimentary goals. The Nature Reserve protects the catchments of the three ancient irrigation tanks (Minneriya tank, Giritale tank and Prakram Samudra), Sigiriya Sanctuary safeguards the natural environment of the ancient ruins and Minneriya National Park was created to capitalize on the flow of tourism to this part of the ‘cultural triangle’. More importantly, this park is one the most important habitats in the Mahaweli region for the long-term conservation of the elephant and associated flora and fauna. Furthermore, it is contiguous with Wasgomuwa National Park, Riverine Nature Reserve, Flood Plains National Park, Kaudulla National Park and Somawathiya National Park, providing tremendous opportunities for conservation in the Dry Zone at a landscape scale.

Day 2: Habarana - Wilpattu National Park - Negombo

Stop At: Wilpattu National Park, off Chilaw Anuradhapura road, Saliyapura, Anuradhapura 50008 Sri Lanka
Wilpattu National Park is the largest national park in Sri Lanka and is world renowned for its Leopard population! It is also one of the oldest, providing a unique scenery of a complex of natural shallow sand rimmed lakes called ‘Willus’. The Willus are surrounded by grassy plains, set within thick scrub jungle. The vast, ancient forest is composed of a remarkable variety of flora and is home to a large diversity of fauna. The majority of the park is covered with dense forest. Even though it is set within the dry zone, most areas of Wilpattu are rather cool due to the shade provided by the domination of tree species such as Palu, Weera, Satin and Ebony. The park boasts the highest mammalian diversity and population in the country with thirty one mammal species found in the area, including Elephants, Sloth Bears, Water Buffalo and Spotted Deer. The Muntjac Deer are more readily seen in Wilpattu than any other national park in Sri Lanka! Among the reptile species, the most common are the Mugger Crocodile, Common Cobra, Indian Python, Star Tortoise and the Soft-shelled Turtle.
