Day 1: Arusha to Lake Manyara National Park

Stop At: Lake Manyara National Park Tanzania
After breakfast our Safari Guide will collect you with a Tanzanian smile from your lodgings for the drive to Lake Manyara National Park. Manyara, a relatively small but diverse park 120km west of Arusha, is so named for the shallow salt lake that occupies a good seventy percent of the parks lands. Flooding and drying seasonally, this soda lake is home to thousands of flamingo and over 500 other bird species. On our exploration of the park we see monkey, giraffe, zebra, wildebeest, buffalo, elephant and with some luck, lions lounging in the trees. The park is known for its diverse landscapes, not only open grassy plains but also primate-filled woodlands and baobab dotted cliffs. After our full day in the park, we drive to our lodgings, where we will be afforded the opportunity to relax and enjoy a sumptuous meal with our comfortable quarters awaiting us.

Stop At: Serengeti National Park Tanzania
After breakfast we set out for the drive up the crater highlands. Ngorongoro Caldera was formed about three million years ago with the massive explosion of a volcano. Continuing as far as the eye can see is the vast Serengeti. This 6900 sq. mile park is inhabited by more than 1.5 million wildebeest, 250,000 thousand zebra, and in the region of 500,000 gazelle. January to April is the season when the wildebeest calve with upwards of a half million young being born. Large predators including lion, cheetah, and hyena, are drawn to the area by this abundance of prey. Many smaller animals such as rock hyrax, bat eared fox, mongoose, honey badger, jackal, monkey, baboon, and African hare, also here inhabit along with nearly 500 species of birds. After our game drive we return to the Serengeti Heritage Tented Camp for rest and dining with the hyena drawn by the sumptuous smells, slinking past but feet away. Our tent, raised as it is on its wooden dias, is well appointed for our rest.

Stop At: Ngorongoro Crater, Ngorongoro, Ngorongoro Conservation Area Tanzania
Today we awake very early to undertake an early morning safari before breakfast to spot the animals in their morning activity and to partake of a sublime sunrise blooming in the African sky before us. We then safari on to Ngorongoro Crater inhabited by almost every species of wildlife indigenous to East Africa including the rare black rhino. In fact, the crater hosts the greatest concentration of wildlife on the planet. It contains a river, several swamps, a soda lake that, from the top, looks like a stream, full of flamingos, with forest and open plains spreading out before our eyes. The large bull elephants that reside here, whom we will meet, have extremely large tusks due to the rich mineral content of the volcanic soil and its grasses. At days end we return to Karatu, to our, carefully chosen by us for excellence, mid range partner lodge for dinner in an aesthetically refined restaurant with our capacious quarters awaiting us for a night of ease and dreams of wild cats!
