About this activity
You will meet your tour guide and the others on the tour at our office in the Devonport Ferry Terminal. (Our office can be hard to find but if you come to the end of the terminal as if you were catching a ferry you will find us sharing space with the Ferry Ticket office)

You will then sign in, store any bags you want to leave at our office and be fitted with a helmet. We have sunblock available for you to use in the Summer and have gloves and jackets available in the Winter. You then go with your guide to the area where you will be given a safety briefing and learn to ride a Segway. Your guides are all experienced riders who will give you plenty of time to practice riding before going on the tour. Once everyone is comfortable riding the Segway you'll be off on your 2½ hour tour to explore North Head Historic reserve and the seaside village of Devonport in Auckland.

As you make your way around the Waterfront, on the historic shell pathway, to North Head - called Maungauika (The hill of Uika,) by the Maori, they made their Pa (fortified village) on the hill in the 1300's, your guide will point out places of historic significance telling you stories and anecdotes of the area. You will stop from time to time to take photos and your guide will take some for you as you'll need to have good photos of yourself on a Segway to show your friends and family back home.

You'll then ride to the summit of this Volcanic cone where you'll be Gob-smacked by the Spectacular views of Auckland City as you round the corner on your Segway. We watch the 15 minute video showing you how the Maori canoes landed in Aotearoa New Zealand in the 1300's and the subsequent settling of the European in the 1840's followed by the construction of the Fort in the 1880's. From the summit, you'll look out over the Hauraki Gulf to see Rangitoto Island rising majestically from the ocean seabed. At only 650 years old Rangitoto is our youngest Volcanic cone.

You'll park up your Segway to take a walk through the bunkers and tunnels to find the 'Disappearing Gun' a part of this fort that was the "Defence against the enemy" guarding Auckland from the perceived threat of Russian Invasion in the 1880's. As you explore you will learn the history of this volcanic cone both Maori and European from your tour guide.

Then it's back on your Segway to ride past beaches, through the parks (where you can have a stop off to have some Segway FUN) and the back streets of the village to admire the beautifully restored Victorian Villas before heading back to where you started on the Waterfront, right in the Heart of the Village. And then it's time to say Farewell.

If this is your first Segway Experience you will be left with the Segway Smile, a Smile from ear to ear that stays there.
