About this activity
Arrival day: You can arrive at any time after about midday, particularly if you'd like to get a feel for the area before starting you biking. We'll meet up and eat dinner together about 8pm (D)
Day 1: A route heading through Rothiemurchus estate, along the boundaries of Glenmore and up into the spectacular basin at the end of Glen Einich, surrounded by 2000ft cliffs. Passing through glorious pine forests and heading into the heart of the northern Cairngorm mountain range, this route offers spectacular photo opportunities. On your return to Fraoch Lodge, Cake O'Clock will be available and you can relax in the lounge with or without a fire.
(B, L & D) - packed lunch provided for your day out on the bike
Day 2: The Kinkardine Circuit starts by into the famous Abernethy Forest National Nature Reserve. Biologically it is Britain’s most diverse habitat, home to over 4500 different species of animal, plant and fungi, including some of our rarest. Passing by beautiful Loch Garten there’s the opportunity to pop into the Osprey Hide to learn about these spectacular fish eating hawks. With bearded lichens hanging from every branch it feels as if these woods are straight out of the Hobbit. It’s then over the Ryvoan Pass with it’s wee bothy and down to a beautiful lochan (lake) for a picnic lunch before you complete the gentle descent with a couple of café options before heading for home
(B, L & D) - packed lunch provided for your day out on the bike
Day 3: This is the big mountain day with an ascent of the “Burma Road”. Built by POW’s during WWII, the track climbs 450m in just under 5km. Hugging the mountain flanks our track twists and turns trying to shrug off the gradient; you are rewarded with increasingly dramatic views back to the High Cairngorms – an excuse to dismount and take a break! On reaching the summit you are again rewarded with 360 degree panoramas and the prospect of a fast and long descent down the other side. Despite being one of the areas classic routes you are unlikely to meet more than a small handful of fellow mountain bikers and once you drop over the back it really does have the feeling of being “off the beaten track, in the back of beyond”. With the hard work done, you head back towards civilisation and the prospect to quench your thirst and hunger with a Pub Lunch. It’s then up and over a small hill for a grandstand view back across the high Cairngorm before tea and homemade cakes back at Fraoch Lodge to round of this superb trip.
(B & D)
Depart: after the big ride, but you'll have a chance to return to Fraoch Lodge and freshen up before you head down the road.
