Stop At: Ateshgah - Fire Temple, Сураханский район, Baku Azerbaijan

The Temple of Eternal Fire - Ateshgah - is an authentic Azerbaijani exotic. It is well-known practically all over the world. It is located 30 km from the center of Baku in the suburb of Surakhany. This territory is known for such unique natural phenomenon as burning natural gas outlets (underground gas coming onto surface contacts oxygen and lights up). The temple in its present state was constructed in the 17th-18th centuries. It was built by the Baku-based Hindu community related to Sikhs.

However, the history of the Temple is even longer. From times immemorial this was the holy place of Zoroastrians- fire worshippers (approximately beginning of our era). They attributed mystical significance to the inextinguishable fire and came there to worship the relic.

The strange mud volcanoes of Azerbaijan are a bizarre natural phenomenon in the desert near Baku.

Stop At: Gobustan Rock Art, 60 km South of Baku, Baku Azerbaijan

Gobustan Rock Art Cultural Landscape

Gobustan Rock Art Cultural Landscape covers three areas of a plateau of rocky boulders rising out of the semi-desert of central Azerbaijan, with an outstanding collection of more than 6,000 rock engravings bearing testimony to 40,000 years of rock art. The site also features the remains of inhabited caves, settlements and burials, all reflecting an intensive human use by the inhabitants of the area during the wet period that followed the last Ice Age, from the Upper Paleolithic to the Middle Ages. The site, which covers an area of 537 ha, is part of the larger protected Gobustan Reservation.

Heydar Aliyev Centre

The iconic Heydar Aliyev Centre was designed by Iraqi-British architect Zaha Hadid and is famous for its distinctive flowing, curved style that eschews sharp angles. As a brilliant piece of post-modern architecture, the building’s shape is an eternal cycle, connecting the past with the present. I booked this trip at the end of May. My voucher did not give a specific starting time or location. I emailed the company, Dream Travel agency, about this and got reply through Viator saying that I would be picked up at my hotel, Karat Inn Hotel, at 8:40 on Sunday morning.. I waited for half an hour and eventually asked chap at reception to contact the company. After he managed to speak to someone who eveñtually called him back with arrangements for Monday. On Monday, i was taken on a mini bus to Dream Tours in Baku. After a great deal of hassle and phone calls, I joined this tour group. We headed towards Gobostan, but not long into the journey, the driver drew up and jumped out of the van, leaving 11 tourists and guide inside. Someone realised there was smoke inside the bus and began trying to get out. The main sliding door jammed and people had to jump over the front seat or go out the window. It was chaos and I needed help. Somehow the sliding door opened and I escaped,. Very scary stuff! Fire Brigade and Police in attendance. Eventually enjoyed trip after hospitality at Police Station! Could you look into this catalogue of disasters? Why wasn't I picked up on Sunday as arranged?
