2-Day River Kwai and Kanchanaburi Tour from Bangkok

2 days
Multi-Day
About this activity
This overnight stay in the Kanchanburi province is designed to give you a real understanding of the history of the area and the harsh extremes people had to go through in the war. With one nights accommodation and meals also included, this is a perfect tour for anyone who is interested in getting to know this region.

Day 1 (L, D)

6-6:30 a.m.: Pick up from major hotels in the Bangkok downtown area.

9 a.m.: Arrive Kanchanaburi province (about 80 miles/130 km west of Bangkok)

Visit Thailand–Burma Railway Centre. This interactive museum and research facility is dedicated to presenting the history of the Thailand–Burma Railway. You will also visit Allied War Cemetery which is a memorial to some 6000 allied prisoners of war during WWII who perished along the railway line, later known as 'The Death Railway'. Post-war, these POWs were transferred to this eternal resting place. Spend some time at the world-famous Bridge over the River Kwai, a part of Death Railway constructed by Allied POWs.

12 p.m.: Take a long–tailed boat on the River Kwai to River Kwai Resotel. Check–in and have lunch upon arrival.

2:45 p.m.: Take a long–tailed boat upstream to visit nearby ethnic Mon Tribal Village & Temple. The Mon people are an ethnic group from Myanmar, living near the Thai-Myanmar border. The Mon were one of the earliest peoples to reside in Southeast Asia and have a fascinating history.

7 p.m.: Dinner at the hotel, followed by a 45-minute presentation of Mon Dance and

Overnight at River Kwai Resotel

Day 2 (B, L)

7 a.m.: Breakfast.

8:30 a.m.: -Take a long–tailed boat downstream to Resotel Pier and continue down the road to visit the Hellfire Pass Memorial. The pass became infamous due to the harsh conditions and heavy loss of life suffered by its labourers during construction. (

01 Jan-30 Jun 2018 Hellfire Pass Interpretative Centre (the museum) will be closed for renovations, however, visits will still go ahead to the actual location to see Hellfire Pass. Then a visit will be made to Sir Weary Dunlop’s Park at the nearby Home Phutoey River Kwai Resort. Due to its similar historical thread it is believed that this is a suitable alternative to the museum while it is closed.)

11 a.m.: Check-out of hotel

11:40 a.m.: Lunch at local restaurant.

1 p.m.: Take a historic ride on Death Railway Train passing over original wooden viaduct.

2:30 p.m.: Journey back to Bangkok.

6 p.m.: Arrive in Bangkok and transfer to your hotel

My husband and I really enjoyed this trip. Have always wanted to see the bridge over the river Kwai. The tour was well organised and very interesting. Loved the history that we experienced. Hellfire pass and the death railway memorial was very moving. Accommodation and meals were very adequate. Loved staying on the river. All in all we were very happy with this trip.
