The famous bridge of the Myanmar railway crossing the river at Tha Makham Subdistrict,
Mueang District However, this is not the same bridge that appears in the bridge over the River Kwai by Pierre Boulle and in the film adaptation.The bridge was constructed of wood about 100 meters (330 feet) upstream from the current bridge during the construction of steel and concrete bridges and was rebuilt in 1945 when the steel bridge was bombed. The Burma Railway, also known as the Death Railway, the Siam-Burma Railway,The Thai-Burma Railway and similar names, was a 415-kilometre railway between Ban Pong, Thailand and Thanbyuzayat, Burma, built by the Empire of Japan in 1943 to support its forces in the Burma campaign of World War II. This railway completed the rail link between Bangkok, Thailand, and Rangoon, Burma (now Yangon). The Kanchanaburi War Cemetery (known locally as the Don-Rak War Cemetery) is the main prisoner of war cemetery for victims of Japanese imprisonment while building the Burma Railway. It is on the main road, Saeng Chuto Road, through the town of Kanchanaburi, Thailand, adjacent to an older Chinese cemetery.
The cemetery was designed by Colin St Clair Oakes and is maintained by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission. buried there, mostly Australian, British, and Dutch. It contains the remains of prisoners buried beside the south section of the railway from Bangkok to Nieke, excepting those identified as Americans, whose remains were repatriated.
