Life as a Fisherman: Full-Day Experience from Bangkok
1 day
Full Day
About this activity
You will be picked up in the morning from the meeting point at Exit 1 of Wong Wian Yai BTS Station at around 8am. Transfer from your hotel to the Skytrain and to the BTS Skytrain station is on own arrangement.
From here, your local guide will bring you to the local train station that rails away from Bangkok and follows the coastline to Bang Khun Tian, a small community that lives and works what the sea is giving them. Surrounded by mangrove forests, small hidden canals and the sea just a stone’s throw away, a more local presentation of Thailand simply cannot be given. From this train station, board a ‘song Taew’ (local truck) to the farm, just a few kilometres away from the sea.
Your day starts with a visit to a shrimp and cockle farmer who will show you how this very traditional means of labor is still very much effective. It is a delight to see each guest partaking in this maritime farming method and you will be certain that this is a very fun-filled activity when joining the locals.
A workshop is next on the program: using only natural dye and material and under the guidance of one of the teachers and apprentices, making tie dye handkerchiefs will be easy and something to take home with you as a souvenir.
A freshly cooking seafood lunch by one of the local families will break up the day to exchange the morning experiences with your fellow travelers before your host for the day, guides you from a local boat pier for a scenic canal tour where the Gulf of Thailand meets the provincial borders of Bangkok and Samut Sakorn, He is very happy to even show you his home at the San Taw community prior to boarding his friend’s boat! Cockle picking, relaxing and kayaking through the canals are all part of the package after this interesting local experience.
If you really want to get further into the cockle picking, bring some clean clothes as to understand the hard labor that goes into this, one has to go waist-deep in the muddy waters to fine-tune your cockle picking skills. There are also a couple of kayaks you can row to explore the community along the canal.
This is a very much local vibe orientated tour, where you will be given the chance to understand the local community and environment and the importance of planting mangroves in the area. This trip supports the local fisherman family and helps keep the spirit of agro-tourism strong in his community.
Finally it is time to say goodbye as you embark on the boat, bus and train journey back to city life in Bangkok and the place where we started in the morning. Arrival at Wong Wian Yai BTS Station and transfer on own arrangement to your Bangkok hotel.
