Half Day Exploring Koh Kret

Half Day
About this activity

There is nothing artificial about Koh Kret, except that this island in the Chao Phraya River has gained its shape and location after a massive dredging project in the 18th century turned this island into a permanent home for the migrating Mon out of former Burma (now Myanmar). With more than 300 years of history under its belt, this small island nowadays forms a regular escape from Bangkok’s fast moving lifestyle. Reasons aplenty to make your way towards this speck in the Chao Phraya, ranging from its food (and in particular its sweets), its cool and calm lifestyle, and unique pottery making style, transferred from Mon generation to Mon generation. Close to being a full day away, Koh Kret’s small, winding roads with water surrounding the island from all directions is just too inviting not to accept its invitation to visit.

An early morning pick-up by your English speaking guide and driver from your Bangkok hotel (conditions apply) we head out of the city centre into northern directions, almost following the contours of the Chao Phraya River. The island of Koh Kret only can be reached via a small ferry service from the Nonthaburi-based Wat Sanam Nua, which lies in the vicinity of the Pak Kret district office. Taking the local ferry from the mainland to the shores of Koh Kret is a short but pleasant sailing trip with another world waiting for you to explore upon disembarkation. The majority of the island’s residents have tight connections to their Mon ancestors, known to be excellent craftsmen. Particularly their knowledge of pottery – using their fine, red-black glazed finishing touches to deliver a standard unbeknownst to deliver such end product anywhere else in the country, is part of our tour this morning. A small community on the island still maintains time-honoured techniques which you will able to admire. It will primarily the relaxed vibe that attracts many Bangkokians to make their way to Koh Kret for a moment of respite, trying the local sweets (Khanom) and just relax alongside the river banks. Your guide for this day will point out other important sites on the island, such as the Wat Poramai Yikawat and – when time permits – the large leaning stupa on the Northeastern corner of the island.

Lunch is included during this tour; situated on the other side of the Chao Phraya River, the Suan Thip Restaurant has played a dominant factor in raising the bar locally in providing a great selection of Thai dishes in its lush, tropical setting. The restaurant itself is well-known for its architecture, resembling ancient construction techniques with a touch of authentic Thainess. After lunch, it is time to head back to your Bangkok Hotel (conditions apply) where we expect to arrive at around 15:30 hrs.
