Phra Nakorn Kiri palace
King Rama IV (King Mongkut) ascended the throne in 1851. In 1859 he began constructing a palace complex with a royal temple on the Khao Samon hill. During his reign the hill was given the official name of Khao Maha Samana (hill of the great monk) and as soon as the project was completed he named the palace complex Phra Nakhon Khiri (palace on the hill). He appointed his Defense Minister, Phraya Si Suriyawong (Chuang Bunnak) as the project director.
The complex is locally known as Khao Wang and located at Muang Phetchaburi District in Phetchaburi Province. The complex is spread out over three 95-meter high neighboring peaks. The western peak contains the Throne hall, where the king had his personal living quarters, bedroom and dressing room as well as an observatory tower. A chedi containing relics of the Buddha can be found on the central peak and the eastern peak holds the Wat Phra Kaew temple.
