About this activity
Your guide will be happy to meet you at your hotel at 8 AM and take you on this 2-day private mini trip to two of the most important volcanic places in Ecuador. On our first day we will make a visit to one of the most beautiful crater lakes of the country, which will take us about one hour and a half. On our way we have a great opportunity to explore a traditional indigenous fruit & vegetable market, which are still held by locals on certain days (it depends on the day itself if you are able to visit one of these markets).
Upon arrival at the Quilotoa Lake we will first make a visit to the viewpoint, from where you will have a stunning view of the 3-kilometre wide greenish lake and the surrounding mountains. This will also be the starting point for the adventurous hike downhill towards the lake, which will take about 30 minutes. You can either choose to hike back up for about an hour or rent a mule at the lake. Back at the top of the crater we will make our way up to Lasso, which will take about 2 hours approximately. Your hotel for tonight will be located near the entrance of the Cotopaxi National Park. Upon arrival you have some time to relax after this fun and adventurous day. At night dinner will be served at the restaurant of the hotel.
After breakfast it will take us less than 10 minutes to reach the entrance of the Cotopaxi National Park. The Cotopaxi is still an active and almost perfect stratovolcano with an altitude of 5.897 meters above sea level. From the entrance we will take a drive through a pine forest to our first stop; the Cotopaxi Museum and Visitor Center. Here you can observe a small collection of stuffed wildlife and explanatory material.
On our way further up we will pass by the Limpiopungo Lake, a crater lake located at 3.800 meters offering you an incredible view of the Cotopaxi volcano and the surrounding Andean mountains (if the weather permits it).
As we keep following the marked track we will eventually arrive at the parking lot, which is located at 4.500 meters and the starting point for the unique and adventurous hike up the volcano. The ultimate challenge will be to reach the Jose F. Ribas Refuge, which is situated 200 meters higher. (If the weather doesn't permit this hike, we will make a hike around the beautiful Limpiopungo Lake).
After this adventurous hike you will make your way back to Quito, which will take you about one hour and a half approximately. The guide will leave you back at your hotel.
