The Gothic Quarter (Catalan: Barri Gòtic IPA: [ˈbari ˈɣɔtik] or El Gòtic, Spanish: Barrio Gótico) is the centre of the old city of Barcelona. It stretches from La Rambla to Via Laietana, and from the Mediterranean seafront to the Ronda de Sant Pere. It is a part of Ciutat Vella district.

The quarter encompasses the oldest parts of the city of Barcelona, and includes the remains of the city's Roman wall and several notable medieval landmarks.[1] Much of the present-day fabric of the quarter, however, dates to the 19th and early 20th centuries.[citation needed] El Call, the medieval Jewish quarter, is located within this area, along with the former Sinagoga Major.[2]

The Barri Gòtic retains a labyrinthine street plan, with many small streets opening out into squares. Most of the quarter is closed to regular traffic although open to service vehicles and taxis.

The first mention of a church of Santa Maria by the sea dates from 998. The construction of the present building was promoted by the canon Bernat Llull, who was appointed Archdean of Santa Maria in 1324. Construction work started on 25 March 1329, when the foundation stone was laid by king Alfonso IV of Aragon (III of Barcelona), as commemorated by a tablet in Latin and Catalan on the façade that faces the Fossar de les Moreres. The architects in charge were Berenguer de Montagut (designer of the building) and Ramon Despuig, and during the construction all the guilds of the Ribera quarter were involved. The walls, the side chapels and the façades were finished by 1350. In 1379 there was a fire that damaged important parts of the works. Finally, on 3 November 1383 the last stone was laid and on 15 August 1384 the church was consecrated.

The archaeological site known as the Ciutat del Born; the permanent exhibition on the Barcelona of the year 1700; the exhibition on the Siege of 1714, which will remain at the centre throughout the tricentenary of those events; the programme of regular arts and cultural events held at the centre (language, literature, music, film, puppets, dance, etc.); the series of lectures, interviews and talks, as well as other one-off activities hosted by the venue, all share a common purpose – to preserve the memory of our history in an entertaining, diverse and accessible way.

Epic, exciting, thought-provoking, memorable, unique, open, inclusive, dynamic, integrated, popular and creative – these are just some of the adjectives that define the experience of entering El Born Centre de Cultura i Memòria, whether it be simply passing through on your way somewhere else or staying for a longer visit, attending a regular or a one-off event or really exploring this country's history in depth.

One will never experience two identical visits to El Born, a space that faithfully records past events and helps to give global recognition to the history of the Catalan nation.

Our tour guide Julia was a fabulous hostess, with her we had the opportunity to other sites of the city we did not know. The show itself and the place where it is performed are great, we enjoyed a lot, not so crowded as other flamenco places we had visited before. The pinchos place was the Cherry in the top, next time in Barcelona we will visit it again.

The meeting point was a little hard to find, need to meet at a square instead of the business. The tour was good and the music and food was good.
