Priorat Experience: Wine, Oil and History Tour from Barcelona

1 day
About this activity
Enjoy a relaxed day in this very special hidden area called Priorat. Surrounded by the Natural Park of Serra del Montsant, with its centenary vineyards and millenary olive trees. Learn insider secrets of high-quality Olive Oil and Wine. We will pick you up in Barcelona City Center at 08:30 am. We will drive for 2 hours in our comfortable coach with WiFi, to one of the two only DOQ (Qualified Designation of Origin) regions of Spain. There we will visit two special properties located in the Priorat region, a small mountainous area located in the heart of the province of Tarragona. The geography of this area makes the vineyards to be cultivated on slopes so it is necessary to build terraces, making this a unique landscape. As a result of the particular soil and climate, the vines are weak and bring poor harvests, with very low grape yields. This gives the wines of this area a unique personality. Most experts of the country and from around the world can identify a Priorat wine immediately upon opening the bottle. This region is not only well-known for its wines but also for its high-quality olive oil. In our first stop, we will have a traditional Catalan breakfast made with love and care by the owners of a local Olive Oil mill, There you will learn about how they process this so-called "Liquid Gold" and taste some of the best world award-winning olive oils. You will also have the chance to visit the millenary massive olive trees around and the little ones of the family can feed the donkeys within the property. After becoming "experts" in Olive Oil, at around 11:45 am we will take you to Scala Dei (Carthusian Monastery of Santa Maria de Scala Dei). Wander around this monastery founded by French monks from Provence, who established here the first charter-house on the Iberian peninsula. They chose one of the most beautiful places to site the monastery, at the foothills of the Montsant mountain range, where a shepherd had dreamed of angels coming down from the sky on ladder resting on a tall pine tree. After admiring the beauty of this old Monastery and the peculiar landscape, we will take you our favorite cute & charming winery in Gratallops. There you will have the chance to visit the cellar, learn insider secrets and, of course, taste their great wines. Priorat is a "slow food", "slow drink" and "slow life" land, so we think the best way to round off this trip is to end up here with tasty organic meal & wine pairing. After enjoying your meal, we will head back to Barcelona and we should be there at around 18:30 pm approximately (depending on the traffic conditions). Remember that we ensure small groups up to 15 people, but if you wish to have a private tour for you, just choose our extra "Make it Private" for 300 flat rates per group.
