Stop At: Niujie Mosque, No.18 Niujie Street, Xicheng District, Beijing 100053 China
Your guide will meet you at your hotel lobby in Beijing city center, where you can start this religious tour through Beijing. The first stop is the Niujie Mosque, Beijing’s most historic and majestic mosque. Built in 996, it has a history that stretches back over a thousand years, in which time it has undergone numerous refits and extensions, and has greeted Muslims from all over the world to worship. It covers an area of over 6000 square meters (7176 square yards), and is structurally based on traditional Chinese wooden palaces, yet adopts a typical Arabic-style of decoration. There are no human or animal figures among these decorations as these are considered taboo in Islam.
Duration: 2 hours
Stop At: Zhongnanhai Postal Savings Office, 乙27 Fuyou St, Xicheng Qu, Beijing Shi, China
After the Mosque, we will visit the Xishiku Catholic Church, also known as Church of the Saviour, and former Jesuits Western Cathedral in Beijing. The church was originally established by the Jesuits in 1703 near Zhongnanhai (opposite the former Beijing Library). That land was bestowed by the Kangxi Emperor of the Qing dynasty to the Jesuits in 1694, following his recovery from illness thanks to medical expertise of Fathers Jean-François Gerbillon and Joachim Bouvet. The emperor also handwrote the calligraphy plaque and couplets for the building. It was named "Saviour Church" and officially opened on 9 February 1703.
Duration: 1 hour
Stop At: Baiyunguan Taoist Temple Fair, No.9 Baiyunguan Street, Baiyun Road, Xicheng Baiyun Taoist Temple, Beijing 100045 China
You’ll have lunch at a local Chinese restaurant (Own expense), where you can taste Beijing’s famous noodles. Then you will visit the Baiyun Guan, a Taoist Temple in Beijing also called the White Cloud Temple. This is a popular destination for pilgrims, and not that common of a tourist site, and thus gives you a real insight into Taoism.
Duration: 2 hours
Stop At: Lama Temple (Yonghegong), No.12 Yonghegong Street, Beixinqiao, Dongcheng District, Beijing 100007 China
Afterwards we’ll go to the Lama Temple, the most celebrated Buddhist temple built in 1694 in Beijing and a temple of the Geluk School of Tibetan Buddhism. It is one of the largest and most influential in China, and was the only temple to have been said to have survived the Cultural Revolution, and only reopened to the public in 1981. One of the pavilions within the temple houses a sculpture of the Maitreya Buddha, which is 26 meters tall and is carved from a single trunk of white sandalwood. Take in the architecture and the oasis of calm amidst one of the most buzzing historic districts in the city. Before dropping you back to your hotel you will enjoy a tea ceremony at a local tea house.
