Next, visit the ethereal Forbidden City. Enclosed within the walls of the Imperial City, this historic landmark houses the largest and best-preserved selection of ancient buildings in the whole of China.

Afterward, enjoy a slice of peace and tranquillity in China’s Temple of Heaven. Described as "a masterpiece of architecture and landscape design”, this vast space contains a huge altar surrounded by park walls and beautiful wildlife specimens. Look out for the 4,000 ancient knotted cypress trees which tower endlessly into the sky before enjoying an authentic Chinese lunch in a traditional, local restaurant.

After lunch head onwards to the Summer Palace, a vast collection of lakes, gardens and palaces that serve as a popular destination for locals and tourists alike. Dominated by the Longevity Hill and Kunming Lake, this glorious parkland is the perfect place to take a break from the bustling metropolis.
