Explore "the Deserted Forbidden City", a former grand Prince Mansion. Even it is shared by more than 400 households, its beauty can still be seen everywhere.

Stop At: Dongsi Hutong, East of Dongsi Beidajie, Beijing China

Visit Grandpa Li's home in another former Prince Mansion and witness the beauty of the nearly 300 year old best-preserved coffered ceiling in a private residence in Beijing. Or sometimes, we switch to Photographer Uncle Zhu's home hidden in hutongs. Appreciated his precious photography works of the gates of Traditional Courtyard Houses. Most of the gates have been gone with the hutongs during the large-scale construction in the past few decades in Beijing. We will explore the most authentic Dongsi Hutongs, which have come into shape during the rein of the Mongolian Emperor Kublai Khan.

We will meet Uncle Zhu, the descendent of Father of Studies on Ancient Chinese Architecture. Uncle Zhu is a good friend of mine and his family's courtyard house is the best-preserved traditonal courtyard house in Dongsi area. We will give a try to assemble and dissemble the Dougong, one of the most signficant elements of Chinese Architecture.

We will try to make a secret visit to the former administrative office buildings of the Navy and Army of the Qing Court. A gorgeous Architecture fusion of the West and the East in early 1900'.
