About this activity
Meet your guide in the lobby of your hotel at 9am. Enjoy the beautiful countryside on a 2.5-hour drive to the Mentougou District, approximately 70 miles (110 km) northwest of Beijing. Cuandixia, which means stove in Chinese, is a Ming village built between 1403 to 1424. Cuandixia Village has a history spanning more than 500 years and contains about 70 well-preserved courtyard homes and houses approximately 30 families.

Known for its gorgeous courtyard homes and old-world charm, Cuandixia Village has been a popular location for Chinese filmmakers. Many famous actors and directors, such as Jet Li and Zhang Yi Mou (director of the opening ceremony of 2008 Olympics), have been there to shoot movies. A delicious and authentic Chinese lunch will be served in one of the best restaurants in the village.

After lunch, take a scenic drive back to downtown Beijing to visit Liulichang Culture Street to admire its Qing-style architecture, antiques and artwork. Liulichang is one of Beijing’s traditional old quarters, known for its traditional Chinese Stone houses. Shops containing ancient books, calligraphy, paintings, rubbings, ink stones and antiques line this popular street. Watch local painters and Chinese master calligraphers creating their artwork before your eyes. Conclude the tour by returning to your centrally located hotel in Beijing around 5pm.

For people who like the charm of old villages, this is for you. Away from the usual tourist spots, this tour was kind of quiet. Take a liesurely stroll along the village or climb up the higher part of the village to appreciate the beauty of an aerial view of the village. But climbing does require some moderate physical effort. But unlike climbing the Greatwall, one need not hurry to climb up since there were not much people following behind. Had an informative day with Helen, my guide. She told me the history of the village and took me to an authentic villagers' lunch. We were lucky to have tasted the restaurant's specialty fish dish. People were still inquiring about the availability of the dish even after we have already finished lunch. We were brought back safely by our driver to Liulichang Street. I expected a more rustic type of antique street-noisy, crowded, with vendors displaying their goods on the street....but it was exactly the opposite. The art works chinese paintings, calligraphy, glass art etc and antiques were housed in little stores. We didn't get to go around much anymore as we arrived the area kind of late already but I got to buy some unique glass art that were done by one of China's national artist. Probably if we arrived earlier I would have explored the street more.
