Private Tour: 'Game of Thrones' and Giant’s Causeway Full-Day Tour from Belfast

About this activity
Start your day with a hotel pickup from your central Belfast hotel and travel along the scenic Causeway Coastal Route. As you travel north, your private guide will talk to you about the popular Game of Thrones TV series, adapted from George Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire novels.

Stop in the town of Cushendun and walk to the caves where Melisandre of Asshai gave birth to her ‘shadow baby’ who went on to slay Renly Baratheon. Hear tales of the power struggles, battles and trysts between the noble families of Westeros, and learn gossip about the morally dubious King Joffrey Baratheon.

Travel by minivan to Ballycastle to see where Varys was born as a slave in the Free Cities, and after stretching your legs on a stroll, travel to the Dark Hedges road. With its natural archway of intertwined trees, the road is one of Northern Ireland’s most photographed locations and the place where Ayra Stark dressed as a boy to escape from King’s Landing. Pose for pictures, and then continue your journey north.

The next destination is Carrick-a-Rede Rope Bridge – an iconic crossing that connects the mainland to Carrick-a-Rede Island. While not used in Game of Thrones, the bridge is framed by magnificent headland that provided a backdrop for several scenes. After your guide points out the places that featured in key stories enjoy some free time to take a walk across the bridge.

Take a break for lunch (own expense) at Ballintoy Harbour (Lordsport Harbour in the series) and then travel to the UNESCO-listed Giant’s Causeway to explore at leisure. While the location hasn’t been used in Game of Thrones, the site is the Causeway Coast’s showpiece, and it’s well worth visiting while in the area. Walk around admiring the hexagonal rock columns and gaze out at the crashing waves along the dramatic coastline.

Board your minivan and travel back to Belfast, making one last stop at Downhill Strand – a place that featured as Dragonstone during the burning of the Seven Idols of Westeros. Your tour then finishes in the early evening back at your Belfast hotel.

The driver was very professional and friendly. The car was very comfortable. However, the driver never saw Game of Thrones and didn't know anything about the series.

Being a GOT fan, I opted for a private tour. Keith was wonderful and took great care of me. We traveled the northern coast and I loved it. Beautiful country.

Derek picked us up at our cruise ship and took us on a wonderful private tour in August, 2018. First we saw Carrickfergus Castle before stopping on the side of the road to see Castle Black through the trees. Next, we saw the steps used for the scene where Aria was stabbed. We followed that up by seeing the caves where Melisandre gave birth to the shadow baby. The next stop was Carrick-a-Rede bridge. Now this was definitely one of the highlights of the trip. There was only a 5-10 minute queue to get to it. It was very cool! The Giant's Causeway was one of the best locations for photography that I've ever visited. Such a scenic location. Amazing! After that we saw the beautiful Dark Hedges which looked very creepy. On the way back we got to see King's Landing which was mostly burnt down due to an upcoming battle scene in the next season. Derek was an incredibly knowledgeable and funny guide. I would recommend that you request him. He made our last day in Ireland memorable. A

This full day tour was filled with beautiful Irish scenery of the Irish Coastline. It was breathtaking. So much history. Unfortunately our tour guide was more interested in giving us his personal opinions of Irish/English history, critiques of other tour guides even approaching them while on our tour and the world in general. Half way through the tour I had wished we were matched with a different guide.

This was absolutely the best day tour I have ever been on! The reason: our guide Derrick. So, private tour, party of five, only two of us Game of Thrones fans. We just came off of a two week tour of Ireland, ending in Belfast, so we had already gone to the Giant's Causeway and the rope bridge. When we met Derrick at our hotel for pick-up right on time, I told him that we had been these places so he graciously altered the itinerary to fit our needs/wants. Derrick was so knowledgeable about EVERYTHING! First, he was very passionate about Game of Thrones, and since we had been on vacation and missed the season opener, he was careful not to let any spoilers slip. My husband and I really enjoyed debating the qualities of characters and predicting future events He even made me reconsider Katelyn Stark's role in the mess of Westeros! Derrick is also very knowledgeable and passionate about Northern Ireland, and we all appreciated his insights into the past and present history of the region. We all loved his sense of humor, and by the end of the tour, we felt like we had found a new friend. The tour itself was awesome as well. The sights are beautiful and there was plenty to love about the tour, even if you were not a GoT fan to begin with. Our whole group of five voted this our best experience of our three weeks...and we had some great ones so the competition for first place was steep. The private tour was definitely the way to go for us, and we all appreciated the effort put forth by Derrick to cater to our interests. I HIGHLY recommend this tour, especially if Derrick is your guide!

Fabulous day!! Our guide Ian was excellent! Loved all the tidbits about Game of Thrones filming. We also enjoyed visiting the Causeway and rope bridge. Lastly and most moving was our exploration of Belfast and details about The Troubles! Recommend highly. A strong highlight of our entire trip! Thank you!

This tour was amazing and our guide was friendly, informative and very flexible. We are a family of 4 and only had one day to tour the coast north of Belfast - it was an excellent tour and a very enjoyable day!
