According to one story, as far back as 1276, an early settler called Sir Robert Savage of Ard’s before defeating the Irish in battle, fortified his troops with "a mighty drop of acqua vitae" In 1608, a licence was granted to Sir Thomas Phillips Irish adventurer by King James I to distil whiskey.

The Rope bridge at Carrick-A-Rede is situated near the charming village of Ballintoy. Those that wish to cross the bridge can do so for a discounted price, and the charges for crossing the bridge go to support the National trust which is the charity that is responsible for the upkeep of the bridge.
