Medieval Monasteries

1 day
About this activity
The tour departs from Belgrade at 9 am and leads to medieval monasteries near Kraljevo town - Zica and Studenica.
Zica is an early 13th century Serb Orthodox monastery near Kraljevo. Built by the first King of Serbia, Stefan the First-Crowned and the first Head of the Serbian Church, Saint Sava, Zica was the seat of the Archbishop (1219–1253), and by tradition the coronation church of the Serbian kings. King Stefan was crowned in Žiča in 1217, what made Serbia the sovereign country in the Christian world. Studenica is a 12th-century Serbian Orthodox monastery situated 39 km southwest of Kraljevo, in central Serbia. It is one of the largest and richest Serb Orthodox monasteries. Studenica was declared Monument of Culture of Exceptional Importance in 1979, and it is protected by Republic of Serbia, and in 1986 UNESCO included Studenica monastery on the list of World Heritage Sites.
