Itinerary

If you are a history lover and you like fortified cities, but you are not up to a long, exhausting drive, then this is the best tour for you. Short, pleasant drive will take you first to Viminacium - ancient Roman city and legionary fort. Our 2.5-hour tour will include different objects, explored and opened to visitors. The Mausoleum and the Cemeteries are first on our route. So far over 13.000 graves dating from the 4th to the 6th century have been uncovered. Since some tombs were decorated with frescoes (4th century), that are well preserved, you will have the unique opportunity to see some of the world’s oldest pieces of art. The tour continues by visiting remains of Roman baths or thermae that did not serve only for personal hygiene, but also for relaxation and various social activities. Replica of Roman Amphitheater, that was used for events such as gladiator combats is next. Today this replica is used for organizing splendid concerts and theater performances. We continue discovering this amazing historical complex, with a visit to Roman Vila with exhibition dedicated to 18 Roman Emperors born in Serbia. The tour will be completed with a visit to Mammoth Park where the whole mammoth skeleton (one out of two preserved in the whole world) was discovered during researches.

When our exploration of Viminacium is finished we proceed to Smederevo Fort built in 15th century as the last capital city of Medieval Serbia, before Ottoman occupation. Located on the confluence of the Jazava river and incredible blue Danube, this Fort will leave you speechless. The Small and the Large town are consisting part of the Fortress itself. First one, was built between 1428-1430, in order to serve as the residence of Despot Djuradj Brankovic. Second one, was built between 1430-1439 with 25 towers whose height was more than 20 meters. During its long and turbulent history, Smederevo Fortress was destroyed for several times, especially during WWII when an explosion demolished huge part of the Large Town. Today Smederevo Fort is a cultural property of great importance, a popular tourist attraction and a spectacular venue for organizing musical and other cultural events.
