About this activity
The Community Baboon Sanctuary is located 30 miles northwest of Belize City and is a unique conservation effort bringing together 8 villages to protect the population and habitat of Belize's Black Howler Monkey, affectionately called "baboons" by the locals. The sanctuary consists of approximately 20 square miles along the Belize River and embodies a combination of dense jungle, pasture, farmland, and small village life.

The Howler monkey tour starts with a drive through the old capital Belize City, then onto to the northern highway to the “cut off” of Burrell Boom Village. Here you will then travel to the village of Bermudan Landing passing through scenic eco systems. While travelling along the narrow Boom road you can spot the monkeys in the trees. Upon arriving at our final destination, we’ll gear up to hike some trails where we will be viewing the monkeys in the trees in their own habitats. The sanctuary is not a zoo, and you'll see these monkeys in their natural habitat of the Belize Rainforest.

The sanctuary is about 45min from the port, assuming your here on a cruise ship, and the roads are mostly tarmac but a little rough. Our driver/guide, Cardinal, was very knowledgeable a and had plenty of insight to share along the route, even stopping to show various trees and iguanas. The sanctuary itself is a small affair, I mean the office/shop, but then the animals are not constrained so you have to take a brief walk to go locate them in the trees. And you hear them first! They are way up in the trees, a little hard to see, but eventually our guide at the sanctuary, Shaun, did go coax one of the down and we were able to feed her some banana - the rest remained up in the tree tops. We spent around 45 min at the sanctuary, including the briefing, walk and time with/seeing the monkeys, this part could have been longer even if you can't feed them it would've been good to hang around and watch them some more.

Our tour guide Raymond was so knowledgeable and fun to be with. He taught us so much about Belize and is an enthusiastic ambassador for his country. The Howler sanctuary is an unbelievable example of the community of nature. Shane shared his incredible story with us of what he is doing to conserve the howler monkeys and how he and his family co-exist with them. We had a great time!!

This tour is outstanding. It took over an hour to get to the Howler Monkey sanctuary but it was well worth it for the experience to walk through the jungle and search for the monkeys. Once we found them, the monkeys came down from the trees and we could feed them straight from our hands. An amazing experience for kids and adults!

This was a beautiful way to see nature. I will say that is it a little far from the cruise port (45 min drive) but they pick you up and drop you off with time to spare! The owners are amazing and truly care about the animals. My children gained so much knowledge and it's very interactive!

This was really amazing. The guy really knew what he was doing and had eyes like a hawk, he worked with them since the early 80s. The sanctuary is part of wwf and there are research studies done on the monkeys to make sure there is no hiv transmission. great tour!
