About this activity
This tour takes us on a journey 49 miles north of Belize City to the Maya ruin of Lamanai! The name holds the meaning of "Submerged Crocodile." Located in the Orange Walk district, you'll be able to see the Mennonite and Mestizo population that reside in this area. Before reaching the Mayan site, you get to enjoy a relaxing river tour for 25 miles! This is a great opportunity to see a wide variety of birds, plants, orchids and wildlife. Upon arrival, you will get to enjoy the local cuisine and admire the natural tropical surroundings while you dine. After lunch, the hike through the forest begins, and this is yet another great opportunity to spot wildlife and different plant types along the way. In fact, howler monkeys are often seen in the tree canopy in this area. When you arrive at the mayan site, you get to walk through the great plazas and view the tall structures. The most important structures in the archaeological site of Lamanai are restored: such as the Temple of Masks, The Temple of the Jaguar Masks and the High Temple. This metropolitan city survived for over 1500 years until the arrival of the Europeans caused the civilization to collapse. One of the best parts of the tour involves climbing to the top of the High Temple. It is quite worth the effort as you will be rewarded with a great panoramic view of the pristine jungle and thick vegetation surrounding Lamanai as well as the nearby lagoon.
