About this activity
This Black Howler Monkey sanctuary was created in 1985 (in Belize, black howler monkeys are called baboons, even though they have little in common with African Baboons). Zoologists studying black howler monkeys found that although their population was rapidly shrinking due to habitat destruction and hunting elsewhere in Central America, the Belizean Howlers in the Bermudian Landing area were thriving. After meeting with local residents to talk about the possibility of creating a preserve for the howlers and securing funding from the World Wildlife Fund, the Community Baboon Sanctuary was born. Over 100 village families from seven villages have promised to refrain from cutting down trees on their properties to preserve the habitat and food sources of the howlers. On this adventure, you and your guide will enter the natural habitat of the howlers. It is almost guaranteed that you will have the opportunity to meet some of these monkeys face to face. As you walk, your guide will offer information and answer questions about the flora and fauna of the rainforest.
