Private Tour: Mysore Palace and Srirangapatna Day Trip from Bangalore
En route, stop in the old city of Srirangapatna, which was briefly the capital of the Mysore state during the rule of Tipu Sultan. Located just 8 miles (14 km) from Mysore on an island in the Kaveri River, Srirangapatna is home to the Dariya Daulat Palace (Summer Palace), set amid the gorgeous gardens of Daria Daulat Bagh.
Visit the palace, built in 1784, which houses a museum dedicated to the sultan. See memorabilia, European paintings and Persian manuscripts on exhibit. Your guide will enlighten you about the royalty that lived here and point out unique architectural features, including open corridors with pillars made of teakwood, and outer walls displaying frescoes of battle scenes and portraits.
After your visit, enjoy a sumptuous lunch at a local restaurant and then continue your journey to Mysore.
Upon arrival, visit the centrally located Mysore Palace (Amba Vilas Palace). This former residence of Wodeyar Maharaja of Mysore has been converted into a museum that displays paintings, jewelry, royal costumes and other items that were once owned by the Wodeyars. Hear stories about the royal families who ruled Mysore for more than seven centuries!
The impressive 3-story granite palace boasts several important halls and chambers under pink marble domes and expansive arches. Enter the Ambavilasa hall through a rosewood doorway inlaid with ivory to view stained glass ceilings and a mosaic floor of semi-precious stones. See Indian and European sculptures and ceremonial objects as well as 19th- to 20th-century dolls on display in the Gombe Thotti (Doll’s Pavilion). You’ll gaze in wonder at the marriage hall (Kalyana Mantapa) where peacock motifs decorate an octagonal-shaped pavilion in geometric patterns.
Admire the intricate and richly carved interior as you explore the palace and marvel at its opulence. Your guide will point out features of this fine example of Indo-Saracenic architecture – a blend of Hindu, Muslim, Raiput and gothic styles – and help you appreciate the artistic heritage of this important monument.
After your tour, relax on the 4-hour drive back to your Bangalore hotel by private vehicle. Feel free to request that your guide stop for dinner (own expense) along the way.

This tour is a LONG drive from Bangalore. The driver was 30 minutes late. We started to think he wasn't going to show! He arrived in a small vehicle which was VERY uncomfortable for such a long trip! Every other tour we booked, they drove a mini-van/SUV. We picked up the tourguide in Srirangapatna, hours later.....strange. The guide's accent was so thick that he had information on cards for us to read. He was very difficult to understand, which detracted from the tour. Our lunch was supposed to be included in the price, but we were handed a bill. We paid it, thinking it was futile to try to argue with the language barrier. The guide stopped at a wedding venue, and took us inside to meet the bride, groom and family as they were taking wedding photos! He pushed us on the stage to take pictures with the couple despite our protests that we did not think this was acceptable. He then took us to the dining area and helped himself to food being prepared in the kitchen, offering it to us as well! We were flabbergasted, but he insisted that as a certified tour guide, he had access to wherever he decided to take us! Towards the end of the tour, he received a call from someone and passed the phone to my husband. The person on the other end stated he was checking up and wanted to know if there were any issues. Of course, the guide was there next to us listening, so we were afraid to speak our minds! The driver drove like a maniac, I was seriously concerned for our safety. Also, the driver and guide spent the majority of the driving time conversing together in their native language. In all, I would give this tour no stars, if I could. We've used Viator MANY times in past travels, and this tour was severely disappointing!
The trip out to Mysore was great. Plenty to see along the way. Our driver was very gracious and pointed out many interesting things along the way. My wife even saw monkeys along the trip resting in trees. The old fort, river area, summer home were fun and fascinating. The Mysore palace was great. We were lucky enough to see it later all lit up. Our guide also fit in a trip up to the granite bull temple above Mysore. All in all a great way to see the areas around Karnataka. Thanks!!!
A great trip, good communications prior to the trip, the driver arrived at our hotel nice and early. Took us to Mysore where we picked up the guide who was a local man and knew everywhere, every shortcut and loads of people. Lunch was great. The company called us personally part way through the day to make sure we were OK and were enjoying the trip. Really good service.
Great day! Our driver, Raghu, was pleasant, capable and informative. We had several hours with him on our drive from Bangalore to Mysore. He pointed out things if interest along the way, the drive was very enjoyable and informative. Our tour guide, also named Raghu, was knowledgeable, informative and funny. Mysore Palace was breathtaking! The palace alone could be an all day adventure. We enjoyed the architecture and art at both Mysore Palace and Tipu Sultan's Summer Palace. Very long but enjoyable day. If time permits, take two days to see Mysore and surrounding areas.
