About this activity
This tour will begin with an exploration of the local textile tradition of Ahmedabad, a city which is one of the oldest hubs for this craft. In terms of textile, the city has managed to create an interesting amalgam of ancient heritage and technological modernity.

You will first visit the Calico Textile Museum. One of the finest textile collections of the world, this museum is home to a rare collection of exquisite textiles from all parts of the country. Situated within one of Gujarat’s famous wooden-carved Havelis, this museum provides an excellent opportunity for textile lovers to study and appreciate the variation in Indian textiles across the country.

After visiting the museum, you will begin walking through the narrow streets of the old city and Juhapura areas of Ahmedabad. Here, it is common for one to come across men and women, chit-chatting on their porches as they sit around large wooden handloom frames. Largely, Aari embroidery is practised in Ahmedabad through collectives of craftsmen working from their individual households. Embroidery, a celebrated and adored work of art in Gujarat, requires not only the knowledge of a perfect stitch but also an understanding of the innate techniques through which one can embroider.

Towards the end of your tour, you will visit the central tourist attractions of Old Ahmedabad which include, The Jama Masjid, Sidi Saiyad's Mosque and the Shaking Minarets.
