About this activity
At 0800 AM our professional guide with executive chauffeur reports at your place of stay within Bangalore city limits to drive 2 hrs to the north with a small detour to see the two different Temples. One at Lepakshi and the other at Nandi village. Hot Vegetarian Indian lunch is included. Lepakshi (16th Cen AD) Temple built on tortoise hill by the brothers, Virupanna and Veeranna, has significant place in the Ramayana — where the bird Jatayu fell, wounded after a futile battle against Ravana who was carrying away Sita. When Sri Rama reached the spot, he saw the bird and said compassionately, “Le Pakshi” — ‘rise, bird’ in Telugu. It is a tribute to the engineering genius of ancient and medieval India’s temple builders in the Vijayanagar style famed Hanging Pillar of beaming triumphantly with profusion of carvings and paintings of a huge 100-pillared dance hall, adorned with exquisite sculptures of divine beings, saints, guardians, musicians, with slim columns feature colonettes carved with eaves, overhanging in a curved shape images of Natesha flanked by Brahma, figurines of nymphs in dancing postures, flanked by a drummer and cymbalist.

The treasure trove of various narrative alluring fresco (The colour scheme consists of vegetable and mineral colours of yellow, ochre-gold, lamp black, blue and green blended and applied to a stucco surface specially treated with lime with the background in red colour) paintings on the ceiling of ardha mantapa (ante chamber), is the Asia's largest, measuring 23 by 13 feet (7.0 m × 4.0 m) with the 14 avatars of Lord Shiva and a huge remarkable monolithic boulder of granite stone with carving of three coiled seven-hooded serpent providing an umbrella cover over a Lingam. Spectacular Gigantic Nandi sculpture in couchant posture is the India’s biggest monolithic Bull, 10 Mtr length and 6 Mtr is a colossal structure decorated by Necklace and Bells, besides the perfectly proportioned body, finely-carved ornaments, and smooth contours add to its grandeur. The temple’s main deity is Veerabhadra, the fiery bearing an uncharacteristically serene expression god created by Shiva related to immolation of Parvathi.

Twin temples (810 AD) at Nandi Village are perhaps the finest and the most ornate of the Dravidian temples in Karnataka, with Kalyana Mantapa and a huge stepped temple tank enclosed by a cloister outer walls of the north and south shrines have pilasters, turrets and pierced windows with frieze of elephants, yaalis and lions intercepted with each other creepers and birds. Ornate pillars in black stone is typical to Hoysala architecture of Nolamba construction with pilasters on the outer walls of the shrines, perforated decorative stone windows which contain figures is a large where lamps are lit on certain festive days
