In the 1980s and 1990s, a revival in the Indian wine industry took hold. International influences and an increasingly cosmopolitan Indian middle class supported growth in the domestic wine industry. More recently, demand has been increasing at a rate of 20-30 percent a year. Just north of Bangalore you will find lush green vineyards producing some of the best wines India produces. Their quality is such that almost all of the international wine awards given to India have been won by wines from the Karnataka region.

Grape growing and wine making in India trace back to the Bronze Age, when Persian traders brought the practice to the region. Then European travelers brought wine to the courts of the Mughal emperors Akbar, Jehangir and Shah Jehan. The next important contribution was made by the Portuguese settlers who not only improved the wine they found in the 16th century, but also introduced a new variety of wine for the Indian sub-continent. Today, about seventy producers account for the 24 million bottles that India produces per year. A little more than 10 per cent of that total is exported. The principal red grapes are Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Pinot Noir. White varieties include Sauvignon Blanc, Chenin Blanc and Chardonnay.
