Stop At: Brandenburg Gate, Pariser Platz, 10117 Berlin Germany
Why did people climb on top of Brandenburg Gate on 9th November 1989, night when the Berlin Wall came down?
Perhaps because they knew it would make a pretty foto for the headlines ;-)
At the same time the gate has always been a symbol of political power, so climbing up on top of it also reads as:
"WE are the people and from now on we want to govern our lives ourselves."
Which is why Brandenburg Gate is known today as the symbol of democracy in a free and reunited Germany.
Before that, however, the Gate has seen all kinds of masters, from feudal kings to Soviet soldiers, making it an excellent starting point for looking into the history of Berlin.
Duration: 30 minutes
Stop At: Unter den Linden, Berlin Germany
We take a look at the oldest street crossing in Berlin, where the first royal and the first civilian street intersect
Duration: 15 minutes
Stop At: Berlin Friedrichstrasse Station, Georgenstr. 14/17, 10117 Berlin Germany
Here we learn about the possible ways for "normal" citizens in East and West Berlin to interact
Duration: 15 minutes
Stop At: Palace of Tears, Reichstagufer 17 Mitte, 10117 Berlin Germany
This is where the western visitors to East Berlin had to say goodbye to their loved ones. We visit the museum and learn more about daily life in divided Berlin
Duration: 20 minutes
Stop At: Scheunenviertel, Berlin Germany
This old residential neighborhood was among the first areas of East Berlin to be transformed by a large number of arts and subculture projects which filled the empty spaces left by WWII and the failed socialist experiment in GDR.
Duration: 30 minutes
