About this activity
Meet at Pariser Platz in the morning to begin your 3-hour small-group walking tour. Your guide, an expert historian, will explain the history of WWII and Hitler’s Nazi regime while leading you through central Berlin and along the remains of the Berlin Wall toward your final destination: the Topography of Terror.
As you walk, learn about the rise and fall of the Nazis during Germany's darkest period, from 1933 to 1945, when Adolf Hitler and his National Socialist Party steered the country into war and terror. Listen as your guide points out monuments designed by Hitler’s chief architect, Albert Speer, that bear witness to the dictatorial reign of the Third Reich.
Learn what sparked Hitler’s rise to power as you stroll from the Reichstag, Germany’s parliament building, to Brandenburg Gate. Here, you can look down one of the main boulevards of Speer’s proposed plan for the new monumental center of 'World Capital Germania,' as Nazi Berlin was to be renamed.
Pause for a moment of reflection and remembrance at the enigmatic Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe, also known as the Holocaust Memorial. Then continue through the former Wilhemstrasse government quarter, passing many other Nazi–related sites, memorials and buildings including Hitler’s Chancellery, the former Reich Ministry of Aviation (Luftwaffe), the major offices that orchestrated the war and the Führerbunker, the underground bunker complex where Hitler resided.
Arrive at the Topography of Terror, located on the site of the former Gestapo and SS headquarters. During a self-guided tour, learn how the museum’s intentioned location speaks to Berlin’s efforts at confronting and grappling with its horrific and tragic past.
See the excavated cellars where political prisoners were tortured and executed, and explore the indoor exhibits for a comprehensive, chronological look at the history, development and demise of Hitler and the Nazi Party. You’ll leave this 3-hour tour with a deeper understanding of how this legacy has shaped Berlin today.
