Warnemünde Shore Excursion: Private Tour of Berlin's World War II and Cold War Sites

About this activity
Begin your private tour of Berlin upon pickup from the Warnemünde cruise port. Your private guide will tailor your shore excursion to your interests, ensuring a personalized experience – whether you are most intrigued by the history of WWII, the Cold War or both! Along the way, your guide will convey the city’s history, with particular attention to your area of focus.

Head to Berlin's Olympic Stadium Bell Tower, an approximate 2.5-hour drive by air-conditioned vehicle. You’ll enjoy fantastic views over the entire city, including the abandoned Teufelsberg spy station and a modern residence built by Le Corbusier. While you're there, visit Hitler's Langemarck Halle and the Maifeld – part of the army headquarters during the Cold War.

Next, drive along the east-west axis as you view the beautiful Charlottenburg Palace, Berlin’s only surviving royal residence. While crossing Tiergarten, stop for a photo op at the Victory Column, an iconic Franco-Prussian memorial. Afterward, visit the Reichstag, which served as Germany's seat of power over the ages. Spend time walking around Brandenburg Gate and the adjacent Pariser Platz, Berlin's most popular square.

If you’re interested in WWII history, visit monuments to those who opposed the regime or lost their lives during those treacherous times. If it’s the Cold War that grabs your interest, visit espionage points of the KGB and learn about secret Stasi operatives. Your guide may provide insight about the Jewish quarter, Museum Island, Bebel Platz and Gendarmenmarkt, and accompany you on a stroll along Unter den Linden, once the boulevard of the Prussian kings. While viewing the Palace Square, the famous Humbolt University and Friedrich Street, hear what life was like for Berlin's citizens and the changes the once-divided city has undergone.

When you arrive at Checkpoint Charlie, listen as your guide recounts the most important events of the Cold War. See the nearby café where spies secretly stationed themselves to keep an eye on who was crossing the border. Then, heading back along Wilhelm Street, visit many WWII landmarks of the Third Reich, including the former Gestapo and SS headquarters, Goering's Luftwaffe HQ, the Reich Chancellery, and the bunkers of Hitler and Goebbels.

Whenever you're ready for lunch (own expense), your guide will suggest a variety of options, such as a traditional German beer garden, depending on your preference. Further on, see the modern side of Berlin at Potsdamer Platz. Gaze up at the contemporary high-rise buildings and marvel that this area was once heavily armed with tank-traps and mines. Complete your private shore excursion at the longest section of the original Berlin Wall before you are chauffeured back to the cruise port.

A long but excellent day in Berlin. I arranged this tour long before the cruise as I like to do own private tour not a ship excursion. Our family of 5, ages ranging from 15 to 82 all enjoyed this event. Our tour guide Nigel was very knowledgeable and most amusing.

This tour was a highlight of our Viking Baltic cruise. We enjoyed a personalized tour of historic Berlin and prompt pickup and return to the cruise ship. I think we saw more than those who chose the ship's tour. Will definitely book through Viator again.

I had mentioned that I am in a wheelchair on the Viator website when signing up for the tour, and it never got mentioned to the guide. Even after seeing me in a wheelchair he brought us to a restaurant where the bathroom was down a flight of stairs. There should be more mention and importance of accessibility on the Viator website. The guide was energetic and charismatic, but spoke too much and did not listen to our needs. However, being provided the opportunity to visit Berlin when the port is so far away was a great experience. Fascinating city.

From the moment Herbert, our driver, picked us up at the ship, this tour was simply the most professional and enjoyable of all the tours and shore excursions we've taken! Herbert was prompt, the van was clean and comfortable, and the drive to and from the city included stops at a very clean rest stop that had a restaurant and gift shop, in addition to very clean restrooms. Our guide, Ashleigh met us at the Museumplatz, where we began our walking/riding tour of the city. Ashleigh was extremely knowledgeable, enhanced her commentary with black and white photos taken during World War II and the Cold War, and is absolutely passionate about Berlin and its history - all of which added to our visit to this incredible city. We provided Ashleigh with a list of attractions we hoped to see prior to our visit and she accommodated our requests and then some, including sharing her favorite spot for bratwurst and beer. From the Museumplatz to the Berlin Cathedral, from Humboldt University and St. Helwig's to Gendarmes Square, from many stops along the former Berlin Wall to Checkpoint Charlie, from the Holocaust Memorial to the Kaiser Wilhelm Church, from the Schloss Charlottenburg to the Unter den Linden and the K'dam - we did it all and in the company of two very professional, very friendly and accommodating people. If you only have one day in Berlin, we can't recommend Insider Tours enough!
