Excursion from Bhopal to Bhimbetka including Bhojpur

1 day
About this activity
For people who love architecture and archaeology, this tour is a must to be. So pack your binoculars and a pair of shades for the Sun shines bright.

Bhojpur, that takes an approximately 90-minute drive from Bhopal, is popular for its shrines. The most famous one being the incomplete Bhojeshwar Temple dedicated to Lord Shiva. This temple houses one of the largest liṅga-s in India, crafted out a single rock. It is unique in being left unfinished, with a series of large architectural parts still located in the quarries where the stones were cut and fashioned showing how it was built during those times. Another one is the Jain Shrine that is close to this temple. With a similar stone-raising ramp this also stands incomplete. This temple probably belongs to the same period as the Bhojeshwar temple and this can be discovered through the intrinsic architecture of these two places in Bhojpur.

We will have special Indian delicacy (Gulab Jamun) and refreshments in Obedullaganj, which will be on the way while heading to Bhimbetka.

After a journey of an hour, your stress will vanish as you witness the prehistoric times in the artistic caves of Bhimbetka. It exhibits the earliest traces of human life on the Indian Subcontinent. Located in the Raisen District this is a UNESCO world heritage site that consists of seven hills and over 750 rock shelters distributed over 10 kilometers (6.2 miles). These rock-shelters are the world’s oldest walls which were once home to Homo Erectus almost 100,000 years ago. What’s special about these caves is that it has cave paintings almost 30,000 years old that depict the art and culture of those people who lived there.

After exploring these caves, you will be travelling back to Bhopal, the city of Lakes carrying the prehistoric essence of art, architecture and culture along with you. Both these places are World Heritage Sites and they are of great archaeological and architectural importance. And this tour gives you a glance into the era where humans did not know that a world existed outside those boundaries.
