Stop At: Bogota, Colombia

It might be surprising to discover how religion is embedded in Colombian society. Religion is a factor that defines many social and cultural aspects and has a strong influence on the Colombian lifestyle. This tour privileges the understanding of the history and current life of Bogotá through the influence of one of the most powerful institutions in the last five centuries: the Catholic Church.

The tour starts by visiting the San Francisco church, which contrary to popular belief is the first church of Bogotá. Here you will learn about the time when the Spanish culture and religion was imposed on pre-Hispanic indigenous cultures. After, you will walk along the vivid pedestrian pathway of Carrera Séptima, all the way up to Plaza de Bolívar, home to the Prime Cathedral. This magnificent colonial construction holds many secrets of the Catholic mission on its façade. Afterwards, you will walk the cobblestone streets of La Candelaria neighborhood, until you reach Iglesia del Carmen. The gothic church will help you to understand how Virgin Mary’s worship encompasses various Marian devotions within the Catholic Church.

Finally, you will be driven to the south of the city, to the 20 De Julio neighborhood to witness the largest temple of the Catholic faith in Colombia, Iglesia del Divino Niño. This church is a mixture of Colombian folklore and interpretation of the Bible. Here you will learn more about this iconic church, why it has become the favorite one among Colombians, and about the fantastic work of its architect, Juan Rizzo.
