About this activity
Before describing the route, it is important to have a clear idea of the cultural context of the territory.
The arrival of the Spaniards produced great changes in the communities where they had the most influence, but in the high and remote lands their impact was very weak (or none). Many indigenous people (even entire communities) decided to take refuge in the high mountains as a way of preserving their culture and independence.
This explains how in very high territories throughout the Andes, traits of identity, culture, folklore, traditions, gastronomy, ways of dressing, tools and work techniques will remain intact through time in regions very distant from each other, even in transnational territories.
In Colombia, a typical example of the highlands is Boyacá, without a doubt, one of the most beautiful provinces of Colombia. Territory of impressive mountains, beautiful landscapes, extraordinary lakes, green and fertile land entirely covered by crops, honest and hospitable people who proudly show their ancestors, their legends and their traditions.
The trip is to Ráquira, but the whole journey has the charm of our roots.
It starts from Bogotá to the north, via Chiquinquirá through the beautiful countryside, to turn the deviation to Ráquira (potters' village, according to the translation from Chibcha, native language).
On Sunday the traditional local market is celebrated, one of the most authentic events in Colombia, where you can feel the real atmosphere of the South American Andes.
La Candelaria village, seven km ahead of Ráquira, is famous for the Monastery of the same name, founded in 1597 by the Augustinian priests. The architecture of the monastery, the art collection and the surrounding desert present a landscape of extraordinary beauty.
A delicious lunch in a typical restaurant complements the trip.
Return.
